Offset and digital printing are production routes, not automatic answers about quality, price, minimum quantity, delivery or environmental impact. The useful choice depends on the actual package: structure, printable substrate, artwork, colour target, number of versions, finishing, conversion, inspection and the evidence required before approval.

There is no universal quantity where one method always becomes cheaper or better. A supplier comparison is meaningful only when both proposals use the same package dimensions, board or paper, artwork revision, colour and finish direction, quantity per artwork, sampling stage, packing method and destination.

Direct answer: when should a buyer shortlist each method?

Offset lithography is often shortlisted when a project needs a defined sheet-fed print condition, stable repeated artwork, controlled spot or process colours and a production quantity that can justify plates and make-ready. Digital printing is often shortlisted when the named device can handle the substrate and the project values shorter version runs, variable data or reduced plate preparation.

Neither description is an approval. Ask the supplier to identify the exact press route, substrate, colour method, finish and converting sequence, then review a representative sample. A digitally printed sample from one device does not authorize another device. An approved offset press sheet does not prove that the folded, wrapped, laminated or glued package will pass visual and handling review.

What offset printing controls—and what it does not prove

Offset lithography transfers ink from a plate through a blanket to the printable surface. It can support controlled process colour and spot-colour workflows, but the result still depends on the agreed printing condition, substrate, ink, screening, make-ready, drying and later finishing.

ISO 12647-2:2013 provides process-control context for offset lithographic processes and includes cardboard packaging in its scope. It does not certify a MUGE project, choose the buyer's tolerance or prove that a production sample passed. The ISO page also identifies the published edition as under revision, so the applicable agreement should be recorded rather than assumed.

For rigid boxes, the printed sheet may later be laminated or wrapped over greyboard. For folding cartons, it may be coated, die-cut, creased, folded and glued. Those steps can change visible colour, gloss, scuff risk, registration and alignment. Review the finished package at seams, folds, wrapped edges, glue areas and adjacent panels.

What digital printing controls—and what it does not prove

"Digital printing" covers different devices, inks, toners, primers and feed systems. It can remove conventional plate preparation and may support versioning or variable data, but it does not mean zero setup, no minimum quantity, instant delivery or exact equivalence to an offset colour target.

Record the device and configuration used for the approved sample. Check printable sheet size, material thickness, surface treatment, white-ink or primer needs, duplex alignment, solid areas, small type, barcodes, rub resistance and finishing compatibility. If variable data is used, the approval must include data validation and reconciliation, not only the appearance of one sample.

Keep colour approval separate from a screen preview

A monitor image, office print or supplier PDF is not a physical production colour standard. Agree whether the project uses a retained sample, a physical colour reference, process-colour values, spot-colour direction or another controlled target.

ISO 3664:2025 provides viewing-condition context for critical comparison of prints and references. ISO 13655:2017 covers spectral measurement and colourimetric computation for graphic-arts images across offset, digital and other processes. These standards provide context; the project still needs an agreed instrument, method, viewing condition, tolerance and decision owner.

Compare cost without invented break-even quantities

Do not decide from a generic statement such as "digital below 500" or "offset above 2,000." The break-even direction changes with package size, sheet layout, substrate availability, plate and make-ready requirements, ink coverage, number of artwork versions, proofing, coating, foil, lamination, die-cutting, gluing, inspection, packing and delivery.

Ask both suppliers to separate:

  • printing preparation and any plates or data work;
  • substrate and printable-sheet assumptions;
  • quantity per design or language version;
  • proof and converted-sample route;
  • coating, lamination, foil, embossing or other finishing;
  • die-cutting, wrapping, folding and gluing;
  • inspection, rejects, overrun or underrun terms;
  • packing and destination assumptions.

The lowest-looking print line is not necessarily the lowest-risk finished package. Compare the complete approved construction.

Control variable data before production

Digital printing may be useful for unique codes, names, languages or regional artwork. Before production, define the source file, allowed characters, field length, missing-value rule, record count, duplicate rule, barcode or QR verification, rejected-record handling, reprint process and final reconciliation.

One visually correct personalized box does not prove that every record was printed once or matched to the right product. Keep a non-sensitive audit record of counts and exceptions without exposing customer or consumer data.

Review finishing, folds and rub risk on the real structure

Printing is only one layer of a custom package. Lamination, varnish, foil, embossing, window film, scoring, folding, gluing and rigid-box wrapping can alter the approved appearance or create failure points.

Use a converted sample to inspect:

  1. fine type, reverses, barcodes and small registration details;
  2. colour across adjacent panels, folds and wrapped edges;
  3. cracking, whitening, toner lift or ink disturbance at creases;
  4. scuffing where packages contact during stacking and transit;
  5. foil, coating or lamination alignment with printed elements;
  6. glue areas, windows, inserts and product-fit clearances;
  7. the retained production reference and approved artwork revision.

When a failure is found, record the observed condition, affected area, likely process stage, corrective change, new sample identity and approval decision. Do not replace a failure record with a general certification claim.

Treat sustainability and compliance statements as separate claims

Neither offset nor digital printing is automatically recyclable, compostable, lower-impact, food-contact suitable or compliant for a target market. The finished construction may combine paper or board, ink or toner, coatings, lamination, adhesive, foil, window film and other components.

The FTC Green Guides summary explains why broad, unqualified environmental benefit claims can be misleading and why claims need clear, specific substantiation. For other markets, identify the applicable rule and evidence separately. A printing method, paper colour or ink description is not a substitute for project-specific documentation.
