Embedded NFC tags: ask the material questions first
Adding an NFC tag to a rigid box can support brand protection and product information. It also adds a component whose materials and end-of-life behaviour must be reviewed together with the board around it.
- Standards: NFC tags for proximity use commonly follow ISO/IEC 14443. Ask which standard and tag type the proposed tag uses, and how it is tested after assembly.
- Materials: ask for the tag, adhesive and board specification, and for the recycled content of the board if that matters to your claim.
- End of life: ask for documents covering the exact finished construction. Do not describe a tag-equipped box as biodegradable or compostable without them.
Compostability or biodegradability can only be claimed for a specific finished material, with a test report or certificate that covers it and the disposal system the buyer intends to use.
