Smart Luxury Packaging: What to Verify Before Adding Sensors or Tags

Treat a smart feature as a material decision

Brands are asking about thin circuits, NFC tags and sensors that sit inside luxury boxes to support authentication and tracking. Whatever the technology, the packaging still has to be reviewed as a finished component: board, adhesive, tag or circuit, and any coating.

What to ask a supplier

• Which materials make up the tag, antenna or sensor, and where is it placed in the structure?
• Is there a test report or certificate for that exact component, and what disposal system does it cover?
• Does the feature change how the box can be recycled, and is that stated in writing?
• Which devices and conditions will be used to check that the tag reads after production?

Claims to avoid repeating

Compostability or biodegradability can only be claimed for a specific finished material, with a test report or certificate that covers it and the disposal system the buyer intends to use.
